Pool tiles in Sydney

The single most important factor around a pool is grip. Coping, the surround and any steps must be safe underfoot when wet, so a slip-rated, structured finish is non-negotiable. Look for an R11 or R12 (or P4-P5) anti-slip porcelain for these areas - our Bushhammer and the grip versions of Maldives and Portofino are made for exactly this. The pool interior and waterline are a different story: there you’re choosing for colour and water-resistance rather than grip.

For the pool interior and waterline you have two great options. Glass mosaics - like the Spanish Onix collection we carry, made from up to 98% recycled glass - are the premium choice: they’re fully vitrified, fade-resistant, and the way light passes through the glass gives the water that luminous, jewel-like depth you see in resort pools. Porcelain in larger formats is a more budget-friendly, lower-maintenance interior with fewer grout lines, and it can read beautifully too. The colour you choose drives the water: deep blues and greens give a classic lagoon; pale aqua and sandy tones (think our Maldives) give a bright, Mediterranean shallow-water look.

Sydney’s strong sun means two things to plan for. First, glare - a highly polished surround can be uncomfortably bright at midday, so a matte or structured finish on the coping is both safer and easier on the eyes. Second, fade and chemical resistance - pool tiles live in UV, chlorine or salt year-round, so always use a fully vitrified porcelain or genuine pool-grade glass mosaic. Avoid natural stone in the waterline, as it can etch and stain; a stone-look porcelain gives you the appearance without the upkeep.

Pools have curves, steps and a waterline band, so allow roughly 10% more than the measured area - a little more for mosaics, which involve more cutting and the occasional sheet adjustment. Keeping spare mosaic sheets or coping tiles from the same batch is wise, because dye-lots on glass can shift slightly between runs and you’ll want an exact match for any future repair.
