Bathroom tiles in Sydney

Floor tiles in a bathroom should have enough grip to be safe wet. In Australia this is described by an R-rating (R9-R13) for ramp tests and a P-rating (P0-P5) for pendulum tests. For a domestic bathroom floor, an R10 or P3 finish is the comfortable benchmark; step it up to R11/P4 for a walk-in shower base or a wet room with no screen. Walls and feature panels don’t need a slip rating at all, which is why you can use a glossy or polished tile up high and a matte, grippier version underfoot - often from the same range, so the look stays seamless. Big tiles - 600×600, 600×1200 and 800×800 - have transformed bathroom design. Fewer grout lines mean a calmer, more expensive-looking room and far less grout to scrub and re-seal over the years. In a compact ensuite, running a single large-format tile up the walls and across the floor makes the space read bigger and more resolved. If you love the look of a marble-look tile, large format is where it really sings, because the veining can run across the surface uninterrupted.

Most Sydney bathrooms - especially in apartments and the terraces of the Inner West like Newtown and Balmain - are on the smaller side. Light, soft tiles bounce daylight around and visually push the walls outward. A crisp white marble-look such as Crystal White or the soft Cloud, or a warm travertine tone like Rapolano, will make a windowless ensuite feel far less boxed-in than a dark floor would. If you want drama, keep it to one feature wall and let the rest stay light.

Whatever you choose, order roughly 10% more than your measured area. That covers cuts around the vanity, niche and floor waste, the occasional breakage, and a few spares tucked in the cupboard for repairs years down the track - when the exact batch may no longer be made. Bathrooms have a lot of small cuts, so 10% is a sensible minimum; for intricate herringbone or mosaic layouts, allow a little more.
