Choosing the right outdoor tiles
Outdoors, a tile has to do everything an indoor one does and then survive rain, UV, foot traffic and the occasional Sydney cold snap. Done well, an alfresco floor extends your living space and lifts the whole back of the house; done poorly, it’s slippery and tired within a few seasons. Here’s how we steer homeowners, landscapers and builders to the right outdoor porcelain.
Outdoor tiles, delivered across Sydney
We’re a Sydney designer-tile retailer and authorised reseller of leading designer ranges, with showroom visits by appointment. We deliver outdoor pavers and tiles across Sydney - the Eastern Suburbs (Bondi, Coogee, Vaucluse), Inner West (Newtown, Balmain), North Shore (Mosman, Chatswood), Northern Beaches (Manly), the Sutherland Shire (Cronulla), the Hills District and Western Sydney. Come and feel the grip finishes and see how a 20mm paver pairs with its indoor tile, take samples to check against your render and landscaping, and we’ll arrange delivery to your landscaper or site.

20mm pavers for patios, paths and pedestals
For most outdoor areas we recommend 20mm structural porcelain pavers rather than standard 9-10mm floor tiles. The extra thickness lets them be laid on a traditional mortar bed, on compacted road base for a path or courtyard, or dry on adjustable pedestals over a deck or roof - ideal for apartment terraces and the sloping blocks common across the Northern Beaches and harbourside suburbs. They’re strong enough to drive a wheelbarrow across and they sit dead flat. Many of our floor ranges come in a matching 20mm paver, so you can run the very same tile from the living room straight out onto the patio.
Grip is everything when it’s wet
An outdoor tile must be safe wet, so a structured, anti-slip finish rated R11-R12 (or P4-P5) is the standard for patios, paths, steps and pool surrounds. Our Bushhammer and the grip finishes of stone-looks like Maldives and Portofino are made for this. Smooth, polished tiles belong indoors; outside, that texture is what keeps the surface safe - and it has the welcome side benefit of cutting glare under Sydney’s bright sun.
Frost, fade and weather resistance
Full-bodied porcelain is naturally frost-resistant and non-porous, so it shrugs off rain and the cold mornings the Hills District and western suburbs can get in winter. It won’t fade in UV, won’t absorb water, and won’t etch or stain the way natural stone can outdoors - which is exactly why a stone-look or timber-look porcelain is the smart outdoor choice. Real timber decking greys and needs oiling; timber-look porcelain planks give you the warm look with none of the upkeep, even around a pool.
Looks and sizes that work outside
- Stone-look - the outdoor workhorse; coastal, granite and textured tones that hide dust and leaves. Explore the stone-look range.
- Timber-look - warm plank looks (200×1200) for alfresco and pool surrounds where real wood can’t cope.
- Concrete-look - clean, modern courtyards and entertaining areas.
- Terracotta-look - Mediterranean warmth for courtyards and garden paths.
- Sizes - typically 600×600 and 800×800 in 20mm; bullnose and step treads where available.
Order around 10% extra
Outdoor areas often have garden edges, drainage falls and step transitions, so allow roughly 10% more than the measured area - a little more for paths and stepped courtyards with lots of cuts. Keeping spares from the same batch means any future repair, or an extension of the patio down the track, will match. We’ll calculate quantities for paving, steps and surrounds when you request a quote.
